Best File Format for DTF Transfers: SVG vs PNG vs PDF

When ordering DTF transfers, your artwork file matters a lot. A good file can print sharp, clean, and vibrant. A bad file can come out blurry, pixelated, with a white box around the design, or with rough edges.

At TheWear.ca, we print custom DTF transfers and DTF gang sheets for customers across Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, Ontario, and Canada. One of the most common questions we get is:

“What file format should I upload for DTF printing?”

The best file formats for DTF transfers are usually SVG, PNG, and PDF, but each one has a different purpose.

Best File Format for DTF Transfers

For most customers, the best file format for DTF transfers is:

1. PNG with transparent background
2. SVG if your artwork is vector-based
3. PDF if your design is already print-ready and correctly sized

The safest option for most DTF orders is a high-resolution PNG file with a transparent background.

PNG Files for DTF Transfers

PNG is one of the most popular file formats for DTF printing.

A PNG file is great because it can support a transparent background. This is very important for DTF transfers because whatever is in your file may print.

If your design has a white box, grey background, or unwanted background, it may show up on the final transfer.

Use PNG when:

Your design is already finished
You need a transparent background
You are uploading a logo, graphic, or full-color artwork
You want an easy and safe file format for DTF printing

Best PNG settings for DTF:

Transparent background
300 DPI recommended
Actual print size
Clean edges
No extra white or grey background
No screenshot files

For example, if you want your logo printed 10 inches wide, the PNG should already be set up close to that size.

SVG Files for DTF Transfers

SVG is a vector file format. This means the artwork can usually be scaled larger or smaller without losing quality.

SVG files are great for logos, text-based designs, simple graphics, shapes, and clean artwork.

Use SVG when:

You have a vector logo
Your design has clean lines and text
You want the sharpest possible artwork
You need the design resized without losing quality

SVG files are especially useful for business logos, brand designs, and simple graphics.

However, some SVG files may have font issues if the text is not outlined. If you upload an SVG, make sure the text is converted to outlines or paths.

PDF Files for DTF Transfers

PDF files can also work well for DTF transfers, especially when they are exported properly from design software.

A PDF is useful if your gang sheet or artwork layout is already print-ready.

Use PDF when:

Your design is already sized correctly
You are submitting a finished gang sheet
Your file was exported from Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Photoshop, Canva, or another design program
You want to keep layout and sizing consistent

A PDF can be a good option, but it must be exported properly. If the PDF contains low-quality images inside it, the final print can still come out blurry.

SVG vs PNG vs PDF for DTF Printing

Here is the simple breakdown:

File Format Best For Good for DTF?
PNG Full-color designs with transparent background Yes
SVG Logos, text, vector graphics Yes
PDF Finished layouts and gang sheets Yes
JPG/JPEG Photos or basic images Not recommended
Screenshot Quick previews only Not recommended

For most DTF orders, we recommend uploading PNG, SVG, or PDF.

File Formats to Avoid for DTF Transfers

Some file types can cause problems when printing DTF transfers.

Avoid uploading:

Screenshots
Low-resolution JPG files
Images copied from Google
Blurry photos of a logo
Files with white boxes around the design
Canva preview images instead of exported files
Files with watermarks
Artwork smaller than the final print size

A screenshot may look fine on your phone, but it usually does not have enough quality for professional DTF printing.

Why Transparent Background Matters

For DTF printing, transparent background is very important.

If your artwork has a white background, that white area may print. This can leave a white square or rectangle around your design.

A proper DTF file should only include the artwork you want printed.

Before uploading, check your design carefully. If you see a white, grey, or coloured box behind the artwork, remove it first or ask us for artwork help.

What DPI Should DTF Artwork Be?

For best results, your DTF artwork should be 300 DPI at the final print size.

This means if your design is going to be printed 12 inches wide, the file should be high quality at 12 inches wide.

Increasing the DPI after the file is already low quality will not truly fix it. The artwork needs to start clean.

Should You Mirror Artwork for DTF Transfers?

No. Do not mirror your artwork before uploading.

At TheWear.ca, we print DTF transfers mirrored during the production process. If you upload your file already mirrored, it may print incorrectly.

Upload your artwork normally, exactly how you want it to appear on the garment.

Best File Format for DTF Gang Sheets

For DTF gang sheets, we recommend uploading:

PNG with transparent background
SVG vector artwork
Print-ready PDF

Your gang sheet should be set up at the correct size.

At TheWear.ca, our DTF gang sheets are 22 inches wide and can go up to 250 inches long. If your gang sheet is longer than 250 inches, split it into separate files and upload them separately.
